Design + Montage + Project Management: AFC Program Book

Angel Food Conference book

This project, completed for the June 2019 Angel Food Conference, represents the first time I’ve ever had complete charge of a project of this kind — a 40-page program book! Most of the work was done in Adobe InDesign, and I also used Photoshop to create the cover’s photo montage and Illustrator for the cover typography.

THE COVER: The cover montage blends the main image of coffee cups with a subtle raindrop texture and a map of Oregon; the cover design also incorporates the “with a twist” theme, as well as a cheeky coffee “stain”. (The twist motif was carried throughout the book, as you’ll see in upcoming images.) In addition, I was asked to create the event logo over the very first weekend I was under contract with Oregon Entrepreneurs Network (OEN) — and it had to be based on the previous year’s Angel Oregon Food Fair event, but also make it clear that this was the very first Angel Food Conference. So everything on the cover was my sole design responsibility.

The AFC book cover, entirely my design work, including the event logo, photo montage, and typography.

INSIDE: The “with a twist” theme comes from OEN’s then-Executive Director’s tagline for AFC: “Angel Oregon is back — with a twist!” You can see this theme applied in various ways, from the page numbers to background textures, as well as the “chocolate” twist on the cover. (This theme also led rather directly to the creation of a signature cocktail that was served during the event!)

The back cover. I designed both ads, and wrote the copy for the OEN ad (top).

PRINT: It was also my job to prepare the entire 40-page file for printing, creating bleeds, doing color corrections, preflighting the InDesign file, and delivering the print-ready files to the printer.

SUMMARY: While the bulk of the responsibility for the design, layout, and production of this booklet was mine, much of the content was contributed by OEN staff, participants in the AFC program, and sponsors — I couldn’t have done this alone! Thanks to everyone who contributed to this project!
